What Gives Pornography So Much Power Over Us?

Addiction

Addicts have to rely on secrecydeceptionliesmanipulationscoverups. To keep using the drug.

The thing that gives porn addiction so much power is the normalization of its use by society. Everyone does it. However, once your tastes change and the frequency of use increases, society will brand you as deviant, so your use becomes a secret. As such, you develop solutions that allow you to use again and be an upstanding citizen at the same time. It, in turn, forces you to live a double life.

One that you experience when you are with your drug, and another when you go on your day to day business. Non the less, problems arise. Disruptionslies, trying to explain the unexplainable.

This kind of tear between who you are publicly and who you are when using your drug cannot escape mental problems down the road. A Jackyl and Hyde personality emerges.

Family and friendships are forfeited. Hobbies neglected. Taking care of your health and body is also cast aside. Addiction progresses to such a degree that you can’t anymore make smart life decisions.

It explains why every decision I ever made was wrong.

Impact On A Teen

Porn use usually starts early in life and progresses through the teen years. Most teens are horny, so it’s normal for them to explore. A huge problem may be developing, however. As teens don’t know who they are and are relatively inexperienced in life, porn use and subsequent brain changes can impact them profoundly. When their sexual preferences change because of porn addiction, they get confused about who they are and what is happening to them. Many new beliefs are formed that will harm them later in life. Depression, anxiety, social isolation may develop. The only way they can cope is by using porn to make them feel better, never noticing that masturbating to internet porn is the problem.

I mean, how in the hell can a kid know what is supposed to be a normal experience to go through in life if no one tells them. You think you are normal and that you develop the same way as the rest.

To be clear. Nothing is wrong with masturbation at all. But some of us do have a problem with masturbating to internet porn because we cannot stop.

Usually, people close to you will never notice you may have a problem and will be shocked to their core when you tell them.

Impact On An Adult

Here things might get problematic. If you started to use it early on in life, you probably have numerous life issuesSocial and otherwise.

Ones that find it much easier to get rid of porn addiction are, however, adults whose use started as adults in the first place. They can spot problems that Internet Porn caused them much sooner. It is easier to notice a change in yourself if you know how you used to act and what kind of a personality had.

Porn Is Everywhere

Anyone remembers when you had to go to a store to buy a Pornographic video or a magazine. At first, you didn’t even want to go, because you felt shame at buying it and talking to a cashier. Like, guess what I’ll be doing later.

Now it’s everywhere. Got a phone, tablet, laptop, Pc?

Why is the Internet era suddenly so problematic for developing a Porn addiction and was not so much an issue before the internet became widely available? The reason lies within accessibility and a massive selection of genres—novelty factor at its highest.

It went to such lengths that some recovering porn addicts have to rely on porn blockers to keep away from pornographic content while surfing the web. At no time in our history, pornographic material was so widespreadeasily accessible, and diverse as it is now.

Why Do You Get Sucked Into Porn?

From a biological standpoint, sex is one of our primary needs. It is relevant to our survival. Our brain is built in such a way that it highly responds to sex. The brain does not differentiate between what leads to sex and what does not. If the eyes see sex, the process in the brain begins to push you towards that experience. Add novelty factor, and the brain gets even more engaged. That is because from a biological perspective having multiple sexual partners is an excellent way to pass your genes on. That is why we respond to novelty in pornographic content and get deeper into the bunny hole.

The surprise is another part of this system. Surprise and novelty go hand in hand. When you experience the unpredictable pleasant things, your reward center gets even more stimulated. The brain prefers unexpected outcomes versus anticipated outcomes.

So what happens when you start browsing for porn. No matter what site you go to, you get hit with hundreds of different genres at once. Even if most things you see there are disgusting, you can easily choose the pleasurable types to you. So what happens when you do that daily? Things you see that are disgusting at first in time become normal. You do notice them every day, after all.

In time you must add more novelty and shock/surprise to your genres to maintain the same enjoyment as it was in the begging. It is because tolerance develops. A vicious cycle begins to form. Aaaaaaaaand you’re hooked!

Difference Between Porn Addiction And Drug Addiction?

Porn abuse as well as drug abuse both work on the same center of the brain. They hijack the pleasure center of the brain. The only biological difference is that while on porn, you don’t bring in additional chemicals to set this system off.

Chemical drugs create a physical dependency on these outside stimulants that gives the brain massive dopamine surges. On the other hand, you get Dopamine surges from a normal, natural response to sex, which in your case is heavily intensified by using porn coupled with novelty and surprise.

Pornography addiction falls into the category of behavioral addiction. It means it is a non-substance related addictive disorder. Videogame addiction, Internet addiction, shopping addiction all fall under behavioral addictions.

What Do You Experience When You Are Addicted To Porn?

  • Treat of punishment is insufficient to stay away.
  • You feel anger, remorse, disgust after orgasm.
  • You hide your use and lie to cover it up.
  • People around you probably don’t even notice it.
  • You can function and be successful in your career, despite porn addiction.
  • You rationalize why it is ok.
  • Lossing an enormous amount of time.
  • You make bad judgments, bad decisions regarding yourself and may become impulsive.
  • Denial.
  • Life quality deteriorates (you probably didn’t even notice).
  • You hate yourself.
  • You feel lonely, the only one on this planet with this problem.
  • You think about porn more so than anything else.
  • You make promises after each hit why this was the last time, next day, you repeat the process (can go on for years)
  • Requires higher and higher doses to reach the same high ( your preferred material changes to more and more intense)
  • You know where it will lead you eventually, but you can’t stop (Losing your wife, losing family, social stigmatization, jail, losing your job,…)
  • If you stop using, you get withdrawal symptoms such as ( depression, low energy, no will, severe brain fog, loss of libido, no motivation, your body and mind lie to you, so that you would use again)

I know you don’t care, but I had them all at some point.

There are differences in behavior and what we do to obtain our fix. In some ways, porn addiction is even more devious and isolating than drug addiction. You only need a phone and an internet connection, and you can do it anywhere at any time within one minute of browsing, and it’s free.

Conclusion

It is why we don’t even see it coming. Besides, did anyone ever tell you porn addiction is even possible? If you are like me, you always told yourself it’s natural to do, which helps you unwind. What is wrong with that?
