How To Abstain From Using Porn?

When an urge hits, if not stopped, your mind goes after Porn with everything at its disposal, and if you are not truly ready for it, you will relapse. Your reasons and solutions to shut down urges have to be stronger than the part that wants you to relapse. It is as simple and as complicated as that.

What Can You Do To Abstain From Watching Porn?

  • know your triggers
  • Emergency shut down
  • A powerful reason
  • Don’t touch it!
  • Embrace failure
  • Start journaling
  • Read, Read, Read!
  • Tell someone you trust
  • Delete all your Porn
  • Avoid people that judge
  • Set life goals

1. Know Your Triggers!

You need to know how to recognize what leads you to porn use in the first place. Is it boredom, being on a computer, reading an erotic novel, seeing a particular picture, Social platforms, are you drunk or high, stress, loneliness, are you angry? Whatever it is, you need to find a way how to counter it. So if it’s social platforms, stop using them for a few months. Boredom hits you. Get a hobby. Be busy.

Not everyone will have the same trigger. Some triggers can also be completely illogical. At times I got set off by an air conditioner humming, among other things.

2. Emergency Shut Down

You need to know ahead of time what you will do if the urge becomes too strong and you feel you might slip up if you don’t shut the cravings down right now. These solutions are numerous. Some abide by cold showers, meditating, going on a walk, doing pushups, reading a book, working on a hobby. You get the point. It’s best if you figure out for yourself what works.

It will most likely cost you a few relapses, but that is ok. It is how you learn to beat this.

3. A Powerful Reason

Get a damn good reason why to quit. It has to be strong because you will have days when urges will hit strong regardless of what you do. It will come down directly to face your reason why not to do it. A strong reason might be one of the following. You have to stop this because if you will not, your wife and family will leave you. You might get caught doing something stupid and impulsive. It is making your life a living hell. You spend too much time with it, so your business suffers.

The point is that the reason to quit must be strong enough for you in your life circumstances.

4. Don’t Touch It!

A lot of people also force themselves to abstain from general genital touching at all times. It’s quite challenging since we sometimes do it, not fully aware we do it. It is, however, a dangerous habit to have if you want to abstain from a slip-up.

5. Embrace Failure

Use each fail to learn what derailed you this time and find a solution to counteract that next time. Don’t beat yourself for failure. Dwelling and hating oneself for relapse will postpone the time it takes you to go on the path again. Forgive yourself and get back on track. Here is an article that points out why it is better to forgive yourself if you want to get back on track as fast as possible.

6. Journaling

It is an excellent habit to develop. It will put many things into perspective for you. You will get new insights into why you do certain things. The mind is usually messy and full of thoughts. Writing like 300 words a day about this problem you have will help keep you on track of abstaining from Porn. Only because it helps keep the reasons for stoping this addiction fresh.

It is quite simple to lose sight of your reason to quit if you get an intensive urge and you don’t stop it right then and there. Writing about your addiction helps with that. It keeps the reasons fresh.

7. Read, Read, Read!

You can read about whatever subject interests you, but to some, it helps to read about porn addiction. They gain new insights into their issues, and as the above journaling suggestion, this one helps keep your reasons fresh and come to understand how bad this addiction is. Here are a few books about porn addiction that some people recommend reading.

  • Your brain on Porn
  • The Porn trap
  • Breaking the Cycle: Free Yourself from Sex Addiction
  • The Porn Myth: Exposing The Reality Behind the Fantasy of Pornography
  • Treating Pornography Addiction: The Essential Tools for Recovery

8. Tell Someone You Trust

Someone you are confident as you can be, will not judge you for it nor tell others of your problem. It makes your problem a reality, and you are accountable for solving it. It is hard. I told my mom.

9. Delete All Your Porn

All of it! From Computer, phone, tablet, wherever your collection is. If it feels too hard, use post masturbation clarity and do it then. Delete all your bookmarks. Everything must go. Don’t forget to clean your stash from any USB keys you may have “forgotten.”

10. Avoid People That Judge

Avoid people that judge and laugh at you for doing this for yourself. Claiming this is entirely normal to do for men and women. Ye, it’s as normal and harmless as was smoking cigarettes 80 years back. Or Ancient Romans using Lead pipes to distribute water over the city. You cant hold the ignorance over these people, however. They just didn’t know. There is a vast distinction between masturbating using imagination or masturbating to Porn.

11. Set Life Goals

Take a week or more if you need and brainstorm what you want to be doing in 1, 3, 5, 10 years. Having a goal is essential, if not the most important on this entire list. Because if you don’t know where you are going, you will never end up anywhere. I made a list like this and soon realized I had no idea what I wanted.

You can see by the above list, Porn addiction is no joke, and you should take it seriously. Using only one of the above tools and relying on it is a poor man’s approach. You have to use them all and a few more that you develop through trying and failing.
If you don’t take it seriously, you will never get out of the relapse cycles. It is not thinking of orgasm that draws you back in. It’s watching porn and the excitement it produces. Try to masturbate without porn, and you will see the difference.

Rules Of Abstaining From Porn

There are no rules. Some abstain from PMO for 90 days to reset their mind. Some go for years or even a lifetime of no more porn. Do what works for you. But at least try 90 days of abstinence to see where you stand. Some consider a relapse if they even watch porn others consider a relapse only if they masturbate to it. Set your own rules.

My rule is this. If I see Porn, it’s a relapse because my heartbeat rises quite a lot, accompanied by heat in my mind. It is what I consider a relapse.

You Are Not Alone

Not by a mile. NoFap on Reddit is an excellent place to look around and see how many people are fighting this. These are only a few that know they have a problem. Chances are quite good, you can find people to relate to here no matter how bad you think your porn use is.

It would help if you also visited these guys. Fight the new drug. A lot of information here.

But, Abstination Is Not Recovery

Everything we discussed in this article is true for Abstination, but in the long run, abstention will not save you. Abstention is a starting point with which you will see how deep the rabbit hole truly is. When you will understand the severity of your affliction you will be ready to take the path towards recovery.
